CRYSTAL FARMS HELPS STRUGGLING FAMILIES WITH DONATION OF 26,000 EGGS—IN TIME FOR EASTER
Farmers Nationwide to Contribute Nearly 10 Million Eggs to Food Banks

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - 27 MARCH 2012 — Despite signs of economic recovery, record numbers of families in Minnesota and across America are currently relying on the emergency hunger relief system for healthy, nutritious food. In fact, one in eight Americans and one in 10 Minnesotans are expected to seek food assistance from local food banks and food shelves this year. Among the most needed food items are sources of high quality protein.

To address that need, on March 28, at 10:00 a.m., just in time for Easter, Minnesota’s own Crystal Farms, a Michael Foods Company, is donating more than 26,000 eggs to Second Harvest Heartland, located at 1140 Gervais Ave. in St. Paul, Minn.

Crystal Farms’ efforts are part of a national effort organized by the United Egg Producers and Feeding America. For the fifth consecutive spring, America’s egg farmers are giving the Easter Bunny and families in need a helping hand by donating nearly 10 million fresh eggs. That brings the number of eggs farmers have contributed since 2008 to 60 million—nearly five million dozen.

"Crystal Farms is proud to be partnering with Second Harvest Heartland to help the growing number of families in our community struggling to put food on their tables, especially during the Easter holiday season," said Rebecca Manges of Crystal Farms.

For food banks across America, high quality sources of protein, such as eggs, are especially needed and valued. According to the USDA, one large egg delivers six grams of protein, along with 13 essential nutrients, including choline, folate, iron, and zinc. After a review of the nutrient composition of standard large eggs last year, the USDA concluded that the average amount of cholesterol was 14 percent lower, and vitamin D content was 64 percent higher than previously measured.

“We are extremely grateful to Crystal Farms for its generosity in donating so many healthy and nutritious eggs to help those Minnesotans who struggle to adequately feed themselves and their families,” said Rob Zeaske, chief executive officer and executive director of Second Harvest Heartland.

“If you’ve ever met an egg farmer, you know just how incredibly generous and giving these men and women are,” said Gene Gregory, president of United Egg Producers. “All year long, but especially at Easter, they proudly do what they can to support the communities in which they live and work.”
